ROCKY RIVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY – A 501c (3) ORGINAZATION

Mission of the Rocky River Historical Society:  To preserve and promote the unique heritage of the city of Rocky River so that we may instill appreciation of past generations as well as provide enjoyment, edification, and inspiration for current and future generations.  This shall be done through such activities as programs, research, publications, acquisition & conservation of materials, advocacy of historic Rocky River landmarks, and educational outreach.

The Rocky River Historical Society Vision includes finding a permanent home for the Society; increasing membership; expanding our archives; developing new services for the community; and preserving our history through such activities as conducting an oral history program and documenting current changes in Rocky River.

Interesting and Stimulating Programs for the 2007-2008 Program Year

The program year at the Historical Society promises another series of interesting topics of local and national historic events and places.

All programs begin at 7:00 PM in the auditorium at the Rocky River Senior Center that is located in the municipal complex at the corner of Hilliard Blvd. and Wagar Road. We are indebted to Carole Calladine and the staff at the Senior Center for allowing us to use that marvelous facility.

Be sure and come early for cookies, beverages and good conversation.

The program year starts on September 13th with a program by the National Park Service on the Construction of the Perry Monument. This program will be an audio-visual program covering the building of the monument from 1912 to its opening in 1915.

The November meeting on the 8th of the month will feature Stephanie Vetrone in a one person presentation on the “Romance of Edith and Woodrow Wilson” featuring songs of the time and a monolog by Edith. Many of our members have seen Stephanie perform and this promises to be a special evening.

The January 11th meeting features Mazie Adams, who is the Executive Director of the Lakewood Historical Society. She will give a presentation on the early history of Lakewood.

On March 8th we welcome back Rebecca McFarland who will tell and show us about the World Exposition held in Cleveland  in 1936 on the shores of Lake Erie by West 9th Street. Some of you may have visited the Exposition as children.

We conclude our program year on May 8th with a symposium featuring Tom Barrett, Jack Hoag, Carl Lyngso and Ron Schneider talking about the Barrett Creamery and the Basket Factory which were located on Lake Road, and the huge green house industry that was spread throughout  Rocky River in the not to distant past. How many of you remember the big fire that put the Basket Factory out of business in the late forties.

Be sure and mark your calendars for each of these dates and don’t forget the annual Historical Society picnic in August of 2008.

As you can see we have a nice variety of programs. We look forward to seeing you at all the programs.
