Join us on Fat Tuesday, February 21, for a Mardi Gras celebration at RRSC. Deli Lunch (served 12-1 PM) will feature a Mardi Gras “Special” along with other traditional and tasty Mardi Gras foods. Enjoy the jazzy New Orleans music of the dynamic duo- Bob Ritter and Dean Kelble- as they entertain us from 12:30-1:30 PM. Tax Assistance Begins Feb. 6 at RRSC

FREE income tax assistance will be available at Rocky River Senior Center for persons 60 and older through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, beginning Monday, February 6th. Trained VITA volunteers will be available to prepare tax returns for seniors using forms 1040EZ, 1040A, and the basic 1040 form.

 

State of Ohio individual tax returns involving business expenses and the like are NOT covered.

Learn about the Cleveland Play House (CPH)

America’s first regional theater, Cleveland Play House, was founded in 1915. Each year, an estimated 100,000 people experience over 200 play performances, activities and special events at CPH.

 

In 2011, a landmark collaboration with Cleveland State University and Playhouse Square relocated CPH to the downtown Theater District in the reinvented Allen Theatre at Playhouse Square.

Hills and Valleys: The Changing Role of the First Lady       6 weeks

If one looks at the important role of the First Lady from its beginning to now, it has been a roller coaster of a ride. Like the changing role of women in society, the role of the President’s wife has also changed, gone forward and taken steps back.

Come experience the music and vibrations of the small Angel Harp with music practitioner Sophie Pace. Those who have tried it say the Angel Harp is soothing, uplifting and illuminating.

 

Sophie will also talk about Theo Gimbel’s book, Form, Sound, Colour and Healing, and discuss the variety of ways color and sound can be used for healing and as enhancers for mood and creativity.

 

Sophie Pace has traveled to Europe with her Angel Harp and volunteers at Southwest General Hospital, playing for patients going through chemotherapy.

Learn to paint watercolor by following a step-by-step demonstration by watercolor artist Clela Stelnicki. This is a great way for beginners to get their feet (and brushes) wet and a great way for more experienced students to fine tune their skills while learning new techniques. Artist Clela Stelnicki has taught watercolor classes since 1981. She has been an instructor at the Firelands Campus of Bowling Green State University and currently teaches for the Lorain County Metroparks, the Erie County Metroparks and the Erie County Senior Center.

 

White House – The President’s House

The home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in the District of Columbia is known by many names- the President’s Palace, the President’s House, and the Executive Mansion. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt officially used the term ‘White House.’

 

Presidents and First Ladies have left their individual style in decoration and customs. We’ll review the fascinating history of the building and architectural changes; we’ll explore the residence and the east and west wings, discussing the history of the rooms as we go.

Video: “Roy Orbison & Friends- A Black & White Night”

On September 30, 1987, the stars were in alignment and an incredible concert took place at the Coconut Grove in L.A. Roy Orbison and Friends – A Black & White Night, was filmed entirely in black and white and broadcast on Showtime in 1988.

 

The concert is buoyed by an astonishing cast of Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists- Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, k.d.lang, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, J.D. Souther, and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley’s fabled late ‘60s and early ‘70s touring band. A Black and White Night is a triumphant performance and a superb production of Orbison’s hits including Only the Lonely, Blue Bayou, Running Scared, Crying, It’s Over, and Oh, Pretty Woman. During the end credits, you’ll hear several band members talking about how Orbison influenced them.

Come learn the history and meaning of Mah Jongg as we travel to the Maltz Museum in Beachwood to see the “Project Mah Jongg” traveling exhibit. Designed by Abbott Miller, the exhibit includes dozens of artifacts – scorecards, aprons, packages, tiles – chronicling both the commercial legacy and social history of the game. After our tour, we’ll head to Beachwood Place Mall to have lunch at Nordstrom’s 6th and Pine Restaurant. Following lunch, we’ll have free time to peruse the shops at Beachwood Mall.

Travel with us to the Cleveland Museum of Art to view “Rembrandt in America.” Consisting of approximately 50 works, the exhibition will bring together autography paintings by Rembrandt as well as others thought to be by the artist when they entered American collections. The exhibit presents a survey of the long career of Rembrandt as a painter.

 

Lunch will be at Lockkeepers Restaurant. Entrée selections are your choice of #1 Chicken marsala served with potatoes and seasonal vegetables; #2 Atlantic salmon, oven roasted with salsa verde, served with polenta cake and seasonal vegetables; or #3 eggplant parmesan, baked with marinara sauce and melted provolone cheese and served with pasta marinara. After lunch we’ll travel to the former St. Hedwig’s Parish in Lakewood to have a hosted tour of the Museum of Divine Statues. This nonprofit was founded to rescue, restore, and display ecclesiastical statues in a reflective and respectful museum setting. We’ll have the opportunity to learn details about each statue’s history and their depicted symbols.

Computer lab

The Senior Center’s computer lab has six state of the art computers and

printer. The lab is open Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM, except when computer classes are in session. Check the calendar for dates. Cost to print a

page is ten cents.

A licensed social worker is available to senior residents who are in need of services/information. Call 333-6660.

Rocky River Senior Center, in collaboration with the Rocky River Chamber of Commerce, has initiated a project called BridgeWorks.

 

Call Carole Calladine, Director of Social Service, 333-6660, if you

are interested in seeking employment or are an employer who is seeking

employees. BridgeWorks has weekly meetings on Mondays at 1:15 PM for

people to attend and discuss their job searches.

 

Minibus Transportation Service

The Senior Center provides transportation for Rocky River residents who are

60 years of age or above who have no other means of transportation. The van service operates Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM. Rides for medical

appointments have priority and should be scheduled one week in advance.

All other appointments can be made two working days in advance. Grocery

shopping is limited to Wednesdays only. A wheelchair lift minibus is available.

 The Senior Center serves Deli Lunches, Monday-Friday, 12 Noon – 1 PM, except the third Friday of the month (monthly luncheon and program by

reservation.)
