Isabela Moner is only 8 years old but she will astound you with her beautiful voice. Isabela has been singing since she was two. She has appeared in various productions at Beck Center and on Channel 3’s “Good Company.” She also won the 2009 Playhouse Square Rising Star Competition and recently performed a solo with Carl Topilow and the Cleveland Pops Orchestra where she received a standing ovation.

Learn basic bridge terminology and etiquette, basic bidding systems, slam bidding and play with instructor Fran Mullins. Fran is a former art teacher in North Olmsted, a Martha Holden Jennings Award winner, and a Fulbright scholar.

Somebody hurt you, maybe yesterday, maybe a lifetime ago, and you cannot forget it. Using thoughts of author Lewis B. Smedes, we will examine and discuss the four parts of forgiveness- Four Stages of Forgiving- Forgiving People Who Are Hard to Forgive- How People Forgive - Why Forgive?

 

Come and explore how to heal the hurts we don’t deserve and how to find the peace that comes with forgiveness. Handouts will be provided.

Interpretive Dance/Middle Eastern Dance Workshop - 1 session

Come and have fun while learning about Middle Eastern Dance (called belly dancing only in our western culture), including the wonderful benefits, both physically and mentally. Dance movements are low impact and very nurturing for the body. Instructor Mary Bodnar, of Vibrant Wind Dancers, will teach you the basic dance steps and discuss the essential differences in dance and music between Middle Eastern culture and our western culture. She will also show you her “tools of the trade” including beautiful hip scarves and colorful silk veils.

 

Besides teaching dance and dance workshops, Mary has performed at regional theaters, community centers, schools, churches, and libraries.

The largest temple complex in the world, Angkor Wat, was started in the 800s, completed around 1200, and later abandoned and overtaken by the jungle. Two Frenchmen found it near the end of the 19th century.

 

Our visit begins in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. Then we board a riverboat and cruise up the Mekong River making stops along the way until arriving at Angkor Wat and exploring it as it is today.

The series includes safety issues concerning driving, tips to help seniors adjust to changing health needs and requirements needed to live a productive life. The program will discuss the serious problem of falls, how to avoid them, and offer safe techniques for seniors. Handouts will be provided that include a checklist regarding falls and an assessment study that lists information and suggestions for a safer lifestyle.

Home Energy Assistance Program

HEAP, Home Energy Assistance Program, is a federally funded program that helps income-eligible Ohioans pay their utility bills and improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

 

Justin Reiter, Ohio Department of Development Program Officer, will talk about what the program is, how it operates, eligibility of persons applying, and additional energy related resources available. He will also provide applications and be on hand to answer questions. Following his presentation, Justin and his staff will be available to register those who qualify.

 

2009-2010 Income Guidelines

1 person household                                      Income up to $21,660

2 persons household                                    Income up to $29,140

 

Those who qualify need to bring with them:

1.     Copies of proof of income (Social Security letter, pension letter, pay stubs, etc.)

2.     Copies of a current electric bill and gas bill

3.     If enrolled in a Medical supplemental coverage program (AARP, Anthem, etc.) bring a copy of the bill. The monthly premium can be deducted from your income and may help you qualify for HEAP.

4.     Copy of valid state ID (driver’s license or state ID)

Rivers Casino, just opened in August, is not only the classiest casino, but among the closest casinos to Cleveland! With a population of 12,000, Middlefield is the Amish capital of Northeast Ohio. We begin our day with a visit to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Miller. The Millers will talk about Amish culture as we enjoy a cup of tea and a light snack. Afterwards, our step-on guide will take us through the beautiful spring countryside for visits to the Buckeye Chocolate Factory and Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op. Our next stop will be at an Amish home for a real Amish Wedding Feast. We’ll learn about the Amish wedding traditions and enjoy a sumptuous Wedding Feast of baked chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, seasonal vegetable, seven-layer salad, Amish date pudding, fresh baked bread, and, of course, the famous Amish pies! There will be time afterwards for shopping at the Country Art and Jewelry Shop and the Fig Tree Bulk Food Store.

Computer lab

The Senior Center’s computer lab has six state of the art computers and a printer. The lab is open Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM, except when computer classes are in session. Check the calendar for dates. Cost to print a

page is ten cents.

A licensed social worker is available to senior residents who are in need of services/information. Call 333-6660.

Rocky River Senior Center, in collaboration with the Rocky River Chamber of Commerce, has initiated a project called BridgeWorks

 

Call Carole Calladine, Director of Social Service, 333-6660, if you are

interested in seeking employment or are an employer who is seeking employees. BridgeWorks has weekly meetings on Mondays at 1:15 PM for people to attend and learn about prospective jobs and discuss their findings.

 

Minibus Transportation Service

The Senior Center provides transportation for Rocky River residents who are

60 years of age or above who have no other means of transportation. The van service operates Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM. Rides for medical

appointments have priority and should be scheduled one week in advance. All other appointments can be made two working days in advance. Grocery

shopping is limited to Wednesdays only. A wheelchair lift minibus is available.

 

Deli Lunch in the dining room

The Senior Center serves Deli Lunches, Monday-Friday, 12 Noon – 1 PM, except the third Friday of the month (monthly luncheon and program by

 Reservation).

 

There is no need to make a Deli Lunch reservation ahead of

time. An assortment of daily specials, soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts are available at various prices.
